Congratulations to Elissa and Alec who got hitched last week! This piece was commissioned by father-in-law/father of the newlyweds, Nigel, who is a long time friend of mine. He gave me a very simple brief - “They love their dog so much, they like the colour blue and their personal tastes are on the quirky side.” So I drew this portrait, to celebrate a couple falling head over heels for each other, but mostly, head over heels for their dog Pablo. Huge thank you to Nigel for trusting me with this piece and bringing my art into a special moment for two love birds. May you both have a happy and long life together!

#118 - Kooka: Yellow Trumpets of Latrobe

The same week I was scheduled to paint the two Kooka! sculptures, was also the same week I lost both my family dingo dog and my grandma who lived in Taiwan. It was an extremely hard week for my mother and I but I felt so lucky to be able to escape my
week into a warehouse, with my noise-cancelling headphones and tune out the world as I painted and processed my grief. Each Kooka! is dedicated to the beautiful lives I lost
that week. Beside each beak I have signed ‘Simba’ and ‘外婆’ meaning grandma in
Mandarin. They were both as bright and beautiful as the yellow trumpets of Paddington
and I feel honoured that I had the timely opportunity to dedicate the two Kooka!
sculptures to two incredible lives that has influenced me as a person and as an artist.

“Most people wouldn’t look at me and think that I could be a victim of domestic violence, I didn’t think I could be either, yet here I am as proof the domestic violence can happen to anyone. I felt ashamed, I felt invisible, and I felt stupid. I didn’t want to talk to anyone about it. I thought people would judge me and wasn't sure if I'd be believed or taken seriously.

I was confused because as a gay man, I didn't associate myself with someone who could be a victim of domestic violence. One time I recall that I wanted him to just punch me in the face so that I had a clear indicator that it was domestic violence and a specific reason to leave him.

Domestic violence isn’t just a heterosexual issue, it's a human issue. We need to challenge our beliefs and the way we talk about domestic violence and work together as a community to ensure that in the future, there are no invisible victims.” - @benbjarnesen

The sooner we acknowledge that it can affect anyone, the sooner we can work towards ending it.

A little bit of a different one but a whole lotta fun. I recently got commissioned to draw onto a card to fit inside a collectible case. I had never done anything so small, and the brief was wide open. I figured if it was a collectible, then I should preserve a 2021 memory for everyone so I did a Spectator Jonze version of what the Delta COVID-19 virus 🦠 would look like to me so that it can be a little less scary. 😂💚

With Megan’s beautiful face, I wanted us all to feel unafraid to break out of our prey-like bunny fears and splash the town with our stories, our culture, our expression, our opinions, our passions and our voices. I took an old Chinese saying that my mum said to me ‘Colour will Change on the Dragon’ 變色龍 and spun it to ‘Colour will Change on the Rabbit’ 變色兔 for we don’t ever have to stay the same. Let yourself be heard, let yourself be seen and let yourself be you.

Such an honour to be commissioned by Flora and Luke to celebrate their engagement in a non-traditional way. Instead of engagement rings, they decided they wanted to commission an artwork so that they could share the news digitally with friends and family in this current COVID-19 environment, and to have a piece printed and framed in their home. They met in Brisbane and love the city so with Flora being a dragon in the Chinese Zodiacs, I turned the Brisbane River behind them into something a little more auspicious. 🐉

It was a pleasure completing this commission for Emina's upcoming podcast series, which explores her journey and learning through education, visual art, teaching, travel, history, humanity, medicine, neurology, conversation and her love of books.

Through Emina, I got to discover the amazing work of Fatima Al-Fihri, a Muslim woman from Tunisia and founder of the world's oldest university more than 1000 years ago, which still exists today. Fatima Al-Fihri fought for access to education for all - including women - in the 9th Century, which I can't imagine would've been easy.

We are here because of the people that came before us, who fought to allow us the freedoms we have today. We still have a long way to go, but we have to continue for future generations, even if it is just through having conversations, so that our tomorrow is even better.
